As I am quite advanced in my knowledge of php and I want this book for a particular purpose I have in mind, I am glad to have gotten it. However, I noticed after I bought the book that there were negative comments about it and I thought I would write my opinion about it which people might find helpful. This book is providing me with information about game programming which is unavailable elsewhere (to my knowledge). So it is valuable for me. Have fun with friends, schoolmates or co-workers on multiplayer programming games and show them who's the boss! Compete Join our international online programming contests for fun, prizes or glory. In this PHP OOP tutorial we do a walk through and create a base for game, and make characters. I go through some ways to make your programming more efficient. GameDev.net is your game development community. Learn, share, and connect with other developers in the forums, tutorials, blogs, jobs, projects, and more. However, it is very, very poorly written, poorly proofread and the author uses coding conventions in a lazy and inept way. For a novice programmer, it would be a waste of money and would likely result in frustration and returning of the book. In addition, the author continually repeats obvious points, and glosses over difficult concepts, or simply says, 'remember, all this code is provided on the cd.' Just to prove the inanity of this author, here is the complete text of his 'readme' file which is usually provided on a cd with instructions on how to use the examples: 'These are examples from the book. Use the code however you wish.' Anyway, I'm glad I have the book and am limping slowly forward through the code. He is doing things I've never done, so I am learning, but I would strongly caution any newbie against buying this book. This book uses non-standard coding conventions and is for advanced php programmers ONLY. This book is not exactly what I expected and the old school PHP in conjunction with PEAR is a major pain. I have spent the better half of 6 months reworking the entire script to work with PHP5 and no PEAR extensions. I did find the book somewhat helpful, just not exactly what I was looking for. I wish someone would right a really good mmorp game book that would be beneficial to todays standards. All in all though not a bad book. I did learn a few things that has helped me to move forward in PHP game programing. Which is good because I was getting tired of just using Flash. Not that good. It's unfortunate that the only book dedicated to php game programming really falls short on many levels. The main problem with this book, is it jumps from the very basics of php and mysql to extremely advanced topics all within a matter of a few pages. Entirely omitting users of intermediate php/mysql knowledge. The book has a chapter about creating a MMO (my sole purpose for buying the book).
